The legal field is always changing, with different types of clients and new ideas at every turn. One area that is growing rapidly is law new, which refers to ways in which lawyers use their skills to help clients in unique and innovative ways. This type of law typically involves using a variety of techniques, embracing technology and working outside of traditional office settings. It can be difficult to pin down exactly what is meant by this concept, but it is important for all lawyers to understand how they can leverage its concepts in their practice.
California’s new laws
A few big-ticket items passed into law this year in California. For example, the state’s new privacy law will require companies to disclose whether they share personal information with other businesses. This will help consumers make informed decisions when they buy goods and services. It also protects consumer data from being sold to unrelated third parties.
New York City’s laws
The City’s laws come from its charter, bills passed by the City Council and periodically codified in the City Administrative Code, and laws enacted by the City’s legislature. The City’s legislative process is similar to that of the Federal government, with each chamber (the House of Representatives and the Senate) having its own way of creating legislation. Once a bill is introduced, it goes through a committee process where members research the topic and discuss it. After changes are made, the bill will then be voted on. If the bill passes, it will be sent to the other chamber, where it will go through a similar process before becoming a law. The City’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) enforces the City’s laws. This includes new laws that require third-party food delivery services to obtain a license, prohibit injurious conduct toward Department employees, and require employers who use automated employment decision tools (AEDT) to do a bias audit first. DCWP will begin enforcement of these new rules on July 5, 2023.
