The New York Daily News is a tabloid newspaper that serves the city of New York. It was founded in 1919 as the Illustrated Daily News by Joseph Medill Patterson, and became the first successful tabloid newspaper in the United States. During its heyday in the 1920s, it attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and cartoons. It also emphasized political wrongdoing, such as the Teapot Dome Scandal and romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to his abdication.
In the 1970s, the News shifted its editorial stance from a traditional Republican paper to one that was more centrist. The Daily News has won several Pulitzer Prizes for commentary and news writing. The newspaper was a pioneer of tabloid journalism and influenced the development of other tabloids around the world. Its headquarters at 220 East 42nd Street, designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood, is an official city and national landmark. It was the model for the fictional Daily Planet building in the first two Superman films. The newspaper moved to a larger headquarters at 450 West 33rd Street, known as 5 Manhattan West, in 1995.
In 2018, the New York Daily News was purchased by Tronc, a Chicago-based media company. The move was a result of declining circulation for the newspaper, which had fallen below 2 million copies per day in 2017. Tronc has promised to invest $50 million in the Daily News and keep it under its ownership for at least 10 years.
