For more than 130 years, the Yale Daily News has served as Yale’s primary source of news and debate. It is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States and remains financially and editorially independent. Many of the paper’s editors, writers and contributors have gone on to prominent careers in journalism or public life, including William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Joseph Lieberman, Sargent Shriver, Paul Steiger, Calvin Trillin, and others. The News is distributed every weekday while classes are in session, as well as special issues such as the Yale-Harvard game day issue, the Commencement issue and the First Year issue.
The News features award-winning writers, columnists and opinion formers who bring you the best of New York City and beyond. You’ll find intense city news coverage, politics and the latest in celebrity gossip and entertainment. Plus, no one covers the Yankees, Mets and Giants like the News. The News also publishes a weekly magazine and special issues each year celebrating Yale’s Native, Black, Latino and Asian American communities in collaboration with their affiliated student groups and cultural centers.
As more people turn to digital platforms for their daily dose of news, newspapers continue to decline in circulation. But some publishers are finding ways to stay relevant in the new media landscape. The book provides a rich, fascinating, and necessary anatomy of what happens in a town when its newspaper dies and how some are working to build a different kind. It’s a story of how the press works and why it matters in our democracy, told by a master journalist and a true believer in the power of local journalism.
