The New York Daily News was the first successful tabloid in the United States and reached its peak circulation in 1947. The paper began life as the Illustrated Daily News in 1919, then changed its name to the New York Daily News in 1927. It attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and cartoons. The newspaper was especially interested in political wrongdoing, such as the Teapot Dome scandal, and social intrigue, such as the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to his abdication. The New York Daily News also emphasized its large staff of photographers and developed a highly profitable photo business.
In the 1990s, the Daily News struggled to compete with the rise of the internet and digital media. In 1993, the Daily News was sold to Mort Zuckerman, owner of The Atlantic and the publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times and Britain’s Daily Telegraph. The sale was finalized after a bidding war with Conrad Black, the founder of Hollinger Inc., who wanted to expand his newspaper empire into the New York market. The Daily News had been losing money for some time, and the sale was seen as a way to prevent its imminent collapse.
For years the New York Daily News was based in a building at 220 East 42nd Street, designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood and modeled after the Chicago Tribune Tower. This structure is an official city landmark and served as the model for the Daily Planet building in the Superman franchise. The Daily News moved to 450 West 33rd Street (also known as 5 Manhattan West) in 1995.

The Daily News is the oldest college newspaper in the United States, and many of its alumni have gone on to prominent careers in journalism and public service.
