However, gambling is now legal in many parts of the world, including Canada, Europe, and the United States. Sports betting has become a huge market. Companies are expected to make $4 billion in wagers this year, with the potential for that number to increase dramatically if California legalizes sports betting. Several major sports teams have supported the idea.

New York’s mobile sports betting launch has threatened New Jersey’s dominance. Aside from New Jersey, several other states have passed legislation that allows online casino play. The law has not yet been enacted in New Mexico, however.
One state that has not passed any kind of legislation is Hawaii. However, the state’s legislature recently held a regulation session, which ended in May without much traction. Those lawmakers might opt to advance the bill in the upcoming sessions.
In the past two years, the number of people gambling on the Internet in the UK has grown by 32%. This is primarily due to the rise of social media and the proliferation of mobile devices. As a result, online gambling is becoming more and more sophisticated.
As the US continues to explore ways to regulate online gambling, the Department of Justice is also examining the issue. While the Wire Act applies to all forms of Internet gambling, it is unclear whether the dormant Commerce Clause doctrine will impede the government from regulating its operations. Also, some states have been slow to enforce their gambling laws, in part because of conflicts with the dormant Commerce Clause doctrine.
